Your Irish favourites even cheaper this Christmas

Find out how you can save on your favourites this Christmas

With Sterling performing well recently, Irish expats going home for Christmas will be able to indulge in their local favourites for even less this year.

FAIRFX looked at the top treats that Irish expats will tuck into when they go home and compared the prices of their favourites versus this time last year when the Pound traded at €1.2577 to £1 vs €1.4230*.

Savvy shoppers could get up to 30 per cent more for their sterling this year when shopping in euros and making the most of a prepaid currency card could help them get even more by capturing great rates when it moves in their favour.

For example, the price of a pint of Guinness is now closer to £2.24 compared to £3.18 so it makes sense to find the best way to take your spending money further.

Euro 2014 2015
Pint of Guinness €4.00 £3.18 £2.24
Tayto Crisps €0.90 £0.72 £0.50
Barry’s Tea €3.49 £2.77 £1.95
Clonakilty Rashers €3.00 £2.39 £1.68

Here’s some handy tips for avoiding exchange rate pitfalls this Christmas:

44987_large• When it comes to your holiday money, don’t leave it until the last minute. Exchange rates at airports can be 10 per cent more expensive meaning you could lose £100 of cash for every £1,000 you change – that’s a meal out or some new clothes for you or the kids.

• Once in Ireland, beware of the double exchange rate trap. If you let the seller in a shop or restaurant convert the price back into pounds, they will choose their own exchange rate and you’ll inevitably get the less favourable rate. It always pays to pay in the local currency.

• Debit and credit cards are always a good back up but beware of ATM and transaction fees as well as what exchange rate you’ll be forced to use. Instead, use the already fixed exchange rate of FAIRFX’s prepaid currency card for you and your family.

• If you’re making an international payment to pay for your guest house or car rental, set up a Rate Watch service with FAIRFX so you’ll be informed when the rate is in your favour.

“The rates FAIRFX offers are always so competitive, the online top- up process is simple, quick and user friendly. I have used their currency card in Europe in supermarkets, restaurants, even in a swimming pool and your card payment was always accepted without questions. A brilliant product at much lower cost than using a UK bank or credit card.”
