Young people in Brent among the most ‘socially mobile’ in UK

Brent has been named among the best areas in the country for helping the most disadvantaged young people to realise their potential, according to The Government’s recently published Index for Social Mobility

In common with London boroughs generally, Brent stacks up well against cities, towns and rural areas across the UK for the opportunities it offers young people in the local area to get into a good job and a enjoy a decent standard of living.

The report reveals a stark contrast as some of the richest parts of the UK do least well on this measure, with well-off places like Oxford, Cambridge and Northampton all identified as social mobility ‘cold spots’.

The index is put together by considering a range of 16 different factors for every area, including educational results of young people from poorer backgrounds and the jobs and homes held by adults.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, Brent Council Leader, said: “Brent’s young people are making us proud by doing better for themselves than over 90% of the rest of the country and it is especially pleasing that younger people from disadvantaged backgrounds are doing so well.

“The figures do reflect how tough it is for people to find affordable housing, which is why it’s such a top priority for us to build more affordable homes and crack down on rogue private landlords.

“It is imperative that the council, the voluntary sector and local businesses work together to transform the borough into an area where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and to help make a positive difference to the lives of many thousands of residents.”
