Friends and family of team members from all three teams taking part in the Walking With The Wounded Virgin Money South Pole Allied Challenge 2013 said goodbye to their loved ones today as they set off for Antarctica

Three teams of wounded servicemen and women from the UK, US and Commonwealth, each joined by a well-known celebrity including actor West, who has roots in Ireland, and Prince Harry, met on Sunday evening at Heathrow Airport, as they departed for the Virgin Money South Pole Allied Challenge.

After waving goodbye to family and friends, the teams boarded their flight on Virgin Atlantic and began their journey to The South Pole.

Once acclimatised to the Antarctic temperatures, the expedition will officially begin on December 1 when the expedition plane, laden with equipment and supplies, lands at the start line at 87°S.

The challenge will raise funds for the charity Walking With the Wounded, which trains the war wounded, injured and sick, assisting them to find a career outside the military.
