The official Olympics YouTube channel have released a video capturing the memories of Irish swimmer Michelle Smith at Atlanta 1996 and her quest to become Ireland’s first ever medallist in the sport.
During that Games, the Dubliner became a triple gold medallist in the 400m individual medley, the 400m freestyle and 200m individual medley and also won a bronze in the 200m butterfly event.
These wins were marred by allegations of doping which were never proven, but her career eventually ended with a ban from the sporting authorities for tampering with a urine sample.
Michelle also achieved four European Championship golds and three silvers in her career, and is now currently a practicing barrister under her married name Michelle Smith de Bruin.
