London Irish Director of Rugby is resigned to losing star full back James O’Connor at the end of the season. Smith expects O’Connor, whose performance in Saturday’s win over Worcester which saw the Exiles take a massive strike towards Aviva Premiership survival, to return to Australia.

O’Connor scored all of Irish’s points in their 22-9 victory at the Madejski Stadium to move the Exiles 14 points clear of the Warriors, who remain winless at the foot of the Premiership table with ten rounds of fixtures to go.

“James O’Connor is a world class player and should be playing for his country,” said Smith. “He’ll go back to Australia in January 2015 to put his hand up for a Wallabies Test place.
