Dail Eireann may be adjourned until 22 March while Fine Gael and Fianna Fail try to hammer out a grand coalition but some of its more colourful new members – the Healy Raes from Kerry – showed themselves unperturbed by the delay in forming a new government.
While the bigger parties gathered in the chamber to elect a new Ceann Comhairle (Speaker) Danny and Michael Healy Rae held an impromptu trad seisiun at the gates of Leinster House.
And they promised there would be more in the days to come.
Michael Healy Rae used it as opportunity to thank all those who had canvassed and dropped leaflets for the two brothers.
“We apologise to the guards for holding things up for a few minutes but we’ll be gone in a second. But thanks, from the bottom of our hearts.
“We remember today Jackie Healy-Rae (their late father, also a TD) for starting this. T’was 1997 he went in the gates and we’re glad that we’re here today and we’ll be here other days,” said Michael.
Danny chipped in: “Like all the good teams that came up from the Kingdom before, playing in Croke Park, I believe that we’re going to be playing an important role inside in Dáil Éireann.”
