Two week prison sentence for Irish pensioner

Margaretta D'arcy 266

Peace protester Margaretta D’Arcy has been taken into custody after refusing to sign a bond pledging not to enter parts of Shannon Airport.

The 80-year-old will serve a two week sentence and is understood to have presented herself for arrest at Mill Street Garda Station in Galway and is now in Limerick Prison.

The 80-year-old served a three-month jail term for a similar offence earlier this year.

Judge Patrick Durcan had issued the warrant earlier this morning, but when gardai called to her home she was not yet ready to leave, so arrived later at the Galway garda station.

“I feel very honoured to be going back to jail. I have no fear about it. Many of these women I know from my last stay,” she said.

She intends to abstain from food during her sentence in tribute to people struggling worldwide to save their homes.

She also refuses to pay the €250 fine that has been imposed on her, branding it ‘blackmail money’ for the Irish Government.
