Tributes pour in for Tipp legend Jimmy Doyle

Tributes are pouring in for Tipperary hurling legend jimmy Doyle who passed away yesterday at the age of 76.

365416Former team-mate Babs Keating recalled how the six-times All Ireland winner impressed the late Cork hero Christy Ring, who paid him ‘probably the greatest ever compliment’.

He recalled Ring saying to him: “Do ya know Babs, if Jimmy Doyle was as strong as you and I… no one would ever ask who was the greatest hurler.”

Jimmy Doyle started his inter-county career aged just 14 when he played in goal for Tipperary minors in 1954.

He went on to pick up six Munster titles as he moved to right wing-forward as he progressed to the seniors and set the record for the greatest scoring Tipperary player, with  18 goals and 176 points, until Eoin Kelly surpassed it in 2007.
