Royal Ascot is here and the excitement is building. I always look forward to this meeting every year as we get horses from all over the world competing.
One of the big jockeys who usually has a book full of rides is champion jockey Richard Hughes. The son of trainer Dessie, he knows what it is to have a Royal Ascot winner.
With the meeting starting on Tuesday (June 18), we’ll concentrate on the other days to try and find some winners. Let’s hope by the start of Wednesday that Animal Kingdom has romped to victory, as he was tipped up in this column a couple of weeks ago at 7-2 and that would have got the ball rolling nicely for the week!
One horse that Hughes will be riding on Wednesday is Montridge, who runs in the Jersey Stakes. This horse is very talented but the only question with him may be the ground, as he would not want it too firm. Let’s hope a bit of rain as this would help his chances dramatically.
Hughes also goes on Oriel in the Queen Mary. He got beat on this horse at Newbury a month ago, a ride he should have won, but a lot of these horses need time to develop especially before they go to big meetings like Ascot and I think this may be one of his best rides at the Royal meeting.
