Ballinderry Shamrocks (Derry) 3-09, Kingdom Kerry Gaels (London) 2-07
By Damian Dolan.
So near and yet so far for Kingdom Kerry Gaels at Ruislip on Sunday, as a game that at one stage threatened to end in embarrassment saw the London champions give Ballinderry Shamrocks the scare of their lives.
Already down to 14-men, following Peader Stack’s first half dismissal, the Kingdom found themselves staring at a 2-6 to 0-1 scoreline when Daniel McKinless claimed the Ulster and Derry champions’ second goal, and in a situation as grim as the Ruislip weather.
A brief rally then looked to have been killed off when Colin Devlin tucked away his second goal 13 minutes into the second half to leave the Kingdom facing up to an 11-point deficit.
But in an astonishing final quarter, the London champions hit back with goals from Stephen Browne and Kyrle Holland (from the penalty spot), only for Ballinderry to hold their nerve to see the game out.
