With the hot weather we’ve been experiencing of late, there are a few items in your beauty kit that have suddenly become a whole lot more important.

Who wants to be sat at their desk worrying about sweat patches or fast-developing body odour? Let’s face it, picking a deodorant is just as important as selecting any product in your make-up bag, and a little knowledge goes a long way when it comes to getting the right deodorant for your needs.

Sweat and body odour are typically caused by heat, activity and stress. Sweat stress is released from the Eccrine and the Apocrine gland, with many of those glands are located under your arms. Those glands release a substance containing cholesterol, lipids and proteins which your body’s bacteria identify as nutrients. Nice! Bacteria feast on these nutrients, and it results in more odour.

With so many products on the market there’s really no reason to suffer in sweaty silence. First identify what your needs are and follow our tips to pick the right deodorant to save you from embarrassing wet patches.

Identify your deodorant needs

There are two types of product that target perspiration and body odour. A deodorant prevents unwanted body odour which is caused by sweat, but it doesn’t stop you from sweating. If you want to completely stay sweat-free choose an antiperspirant product, which helps reduce sweat and can also stop foul odour from the start. For your product to work most effectively, showering before use is recommended.

If your sweat is the pits

Excessive sweating can knock confidence, but there are several deodorants perfect for drying up your wet patches. When it comes to controlling odour and sweat that just won’t quit Sure Maximum Protection Confidence is an antiperspirant deodorant cream that you apply at night, before showering the next day. The roll-on deo responds to your body’s chemistry, giving you maximum protection during the next day – even after a shower. Odaban is also an effective chemical free antiperspirant spray that treats underarm wetness, foot problems, wet palms and facial sweating

If you need extra moisture under your arm

If you suffer with dryness due to shaving, pamper your pits with Nivea Powder Touch. It’s great for odour and sweat, and it also moisturises the underarm area. It has a real softening effect as well as a light floral scent that makes it feel like talcum powder – but without the white marks! Kiehls Anti-Perspirant & Deodorant Cream with Orange, Lemon and Linseed Extract also promises to leave skin feeling soft, soothed and conditioned with 24-hour protection against sweat and smell.

If you like a strong fragrance

Soft and Gentle’s Anti-Perspirant Verbena and Waterlily’s long-lasting fragrance doubles up as a perfume and will keep you dry and gorgeously cocooned on the train at rush hour. And if it’s too warm for deodorant and perfume, My Burberry Deodorant spray is infused with the fragrance of the fashion house’s perfume, making it a two in one solution. The mist leaves the body feeling fresh and lightly scented with notes of rose, patchouli and geranium leaf.

Like to keep it natural

There are plenty of paraben and aluminum free deodorants available for green queens. Jason Aloe Vera Deodorant Stick utilises the healing properties of Organic Aloe Vera Gel and Bisabolol (derived from Chamomile) to help rid the body of odour and soothe delicate skin. While Weleda Citrus Deodorant is a handy pump-action spray that counteracts unpleasant body odour while letting your skin do its thing. The fine spray dries within seconds leaving no stickiness and can be used on the feet to refresh and revitalise.
