It may be tempting to lie in bed all day wallowing in self pity after a big night out on the town, but that won’t do your skin any good. Alcohol’s effects on your body are well-known, such as liver damage, but what about your appearance?
Here are some of the ways you can make yourself look beautiful despite the hangover, plus some tips on how to tackle the impact of booze on your skin.
Drink up (no, not more alcohol!)
After a heavy night you’ll no doubt feel like all the moisture in your body has been sucked out of you, and that will show in your face. So drink plenty of water to replenish your body and plump up your skin, as previous studies have found the more you drink the better the blood flow to the surface of your face.
Getting antioxidants into your system will also help flush out the alcohol, so try infusing your water with fruit like blueberries or strawberries, or sip on some green tea, to keep things fresh.
Smother on some cream
You can also buy moisturisers and face creams packed full of antioxidants – look out for products with vitamin C, caffeine and niacinamide if you want to brighten and freshen up your facade. Products like Vivité Daily Antioxidant Facial Serum or Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Gel promise to deliver antioxidants deep into the skin. Green tea is another energising element your skin will benefit from.
Rub away the night before
A good exfoliator or mask will get rid of all that dirt stuck on your face to leave you with a gleaming, hangover-free complexion. Try Garnier Pure Active Fruit Energy Daily Energising Gel Scrub or Clean & Clear Morning Energy Skin Energising Daily Facial Scrub to soften your skin, or if you have extra pampering time on your hands why not try Bobbi Brown Instant Detox Mask or Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask.
Add a glow
Don’t slather on the make-up after a heavy night as you want your skin to breathe. Try a lighter look with tinted moisturiser to create a dewy finish, or a slick of creme blusher/bronzer to bring warmth to your face. If you’ve been ill all morning the natural glow of your face is bound to have disappeared, so the sooner you re-create it, the better!
