Seize the day urges Phelan

By Damian Dolan

London manager Eamonn Phelan has urged his players to grab their Leinster Championship opportunity with both hands, and turn an already good year into a great one.

Exactly 30 years after the Exiles last wielded a hurley in anger on such a stage, Phelan’s Division 2B winners and Christy Ring champions face Carlow on Saturday at Dr Cullen Park in their Round 1 clash.

A historic day for London hurling, but Phelan is keen for his side to prove they belong amongst such lofty company. For the winner’s a quarter-final meeting with Antrim or Laois, while for the losers it’s the Russian roulette of the qualifiers.

“They may never get this chance again – it’s a once in a lifetime. Grab it with both hands and let’s see where it takes us,” said Phelan.

“It’s unknown territory but it’s one of the reasons myself and the two lads (Tom Simms and Thomas Quaid) stayed on – to have a crack at Leinster and to have a crack at the Liam MacCarthy.
