Search resumes for missing Irish surfer

By staff reporter

The search has resumed for a 19-year-old Irishman who went missing off the coast of Byron Bay in New South Wales in Australia on Saturday.

The man had been surfing with two other friends when he disappeared, after all three surfers got caught a rip current in rough conditions.

A 26-year-old was rescued from the water, while a 20-year-old was taken from the rocks, suffering minor injuries.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has been in contact with members of the missing man’s family in Ireland and in Australia.

Byron Bay police, a Westpac helicopter and members of the Volunteer Rescue Association are continuing to search choppy waters around Tallow Beach for the Irish man.

A warning about dangerous surf conditions along the entire NSW coast was issued on Saturday by the Roads and Maritime Service.

“Dangerous conditions are expected to ease in northern NSW later on Sunday but remain for the southern part of the state,” they said in a statement.’
