As both sides suffered with injuries and suspensions, it was 13 players between both sides in this scrappy, but at times tense match. The home side kept their composure although at times tempers did flare between both sides to record a comfortable win over an out-of-sorts St Barnabas side.
The first half saw both sides finding their feet until Sean McDermott’s James McDonnell scored the opening goal of the match. Points from Niall McCoey, McDonnell, Ryan Bennett and Declan Staunton helped put Sean McDermotts in a comfortable three point lead in the early moments of the match. Keeping their composure, the home side defended intelligently and didn’t give away too much penalties, which did frustrate the away side.
For St Barnabas, although they did score with Dan O’Mara and Darren McCann in the middle of the half. Poor discipline and defending was evident during the first half as they gave away some easy penalties to the home side as Sean McDermotts went into the break with a comfortable lead over St Barnabas (1.07 – 0.02).
As Sean McDermotts rung out the substitutions for the second half, it was an unchanged St Barnabas side looking to claw back the massive deficit that the home side had amassed. Although St Barnabas did play better in the second half than Sean McDermotts, the wind was playing a big factor in terms of both teams scoring points. This left both sides trying to find the uprights or the back of the net. For St Barnabas, the deficit was too much for the away side to catch-up on although they gave it everything in the second half.
However, the home side did suffer a scare with one of their substitutions coming off for injury, leaving them with 12 players for the remainder of the half. But with a yellow card for John Dowling, the match was in control of Sean McDermotts.
