RUGBY: The Irishman who wants to give Wasps back their sting

Derek Richardson

By Damian Dolan

Derek Richardson and Wasps RFC may seem an unlikely match, but the London based Irish multi-millionaire businessman and entrepreneur was last week confirmed as the club’s principle shareholder and is now plotting to bring the glory years back to the former giants of English and European rugby.

Having followed his father into insurance industry, Richardson founded Ireland’s first online insurance broker, 123.ie, and is reported to have received over €35 million (£29.8 million) when he sold the company to Royal Sun Alliance in 2010.

However, he still has a number of business interests in this industry. Hello is an online financial services business operating currently in Ireland, while Insurance Solutions is a corporate insurance broking business, based in Dublin.

Richardson also has an insurance business rolling out in the Czech Republic which he hopes to expand in Europe over the next few years.

It’s his interest in Wasps, however, that brought him to wider attention, and he has big plans for the former two-time Heineken Cup champions and four time winners of the English Premiership.
