Royal Ascot appointment for Winters

By Caroline Winters.

Michael Winters admits that he loves the idea of his horses giving enjoyment to people. He tells a yarn about an 89-year-old neighbour who loves a punt. She sent the trainer two turkeys last Christmas as a thank you gesture for substantial winnings on his star mare Missunited. The elderly lady rang him after Missunited’s victory in the Listed Saval Beg stakes at Leopardstown.

Winter’s delightedly informs me that the elderly lady has won the price of a new stove from backing the horse. She also, co-incidentally, picked the right day to ring. His brother-in-law, Adrian Maguire was running Golden Kite in the Connacht National at Roscommon. There were subtle inquiries made. Golden Kite subsequently romped home by three quarters of a length at a generous 8/1. It appears Winters will not want for a turkey in future.

The North Cork trainer, who has between 20 and 30 horses in his care at different stages of the year, has drawn admiration from all quarters for his superb handling of the mare and his other stable star Rebel Fitz.
