Even better than the Rio thing

Rio Irish Team schedule

The biggest sporting event in the world is upon us, and Ireland are hotly fancied to win a few medals, with boxing seen as the island’s biggest strength. Here you can see when to catch Ireland’s sporting heroes on screen, with the BBC providing blanket coverage of the Summer Games from Rio for the tournament’s entirety.

Ireland’s top hopes for gold in Rio are from Paddy Barnes in the 49kg division and the nation’s sweetheart Katie Taylor in the women’s 60kg division. Both are favourites in their divisions to win overall, while Michael Conlan is tipped to at least get a podium finish in the 56kg.

After all of the drama with the Zika virus forcing Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell to pull out of the games, Ireland now have a mix of experience and youth with their new two-player team for the men’s competition. Two-time major winner Padraig Harrington will be joined by Waterford’s Seamus Power, who is currently on target to make the PGA tour next year. The competition is stiff however with big names from the professional game all opting to represent their countries in Brazil, including Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson.

One to watch out for too is UK-born gymnastics hopeful Ellis O’Reilly who made history when she became the first ever female gymnast to qualify for the Olympics for Ireland, following in the footsteps of Keiran Behan who competed in London in 2012. The London-born athlete was this year juggling training and studying for her A-levels and qualifies for team Ireland through her Armagh-born grandfather.
