Raymond Roland Tribute Night

Raymond Roland Tribute Night
Cecil Sharpe House

A Raymond Roland Tribute Night will take place on the 4th June 2016 19.30 @ Cecil Sharpe House (EFDSS), 2 Regents Park Road, NW1 7AY.

It is thirty years since the premature and untimely passing of Raymond Roland, one of the most loved and significant Irish Traditional Musicians to grace, entertain and contribute to the revival in the survival of Irish Traditional Music.

Raymond Roland Tribute Night

Raymond Roland played the button accordion and concertina, he had his earliest lessons from the revered Joe Cooley RIP. He came to London in 1958 from his native Ballyshea, Loughrea, Co. Galway.

Over the next three decades, wherever he played was a focal point for all of the great traditional musicians and followers resident and visiting London. He played all over London, though he is mostly associated with the White Hart Pub in Fulham Broadway. He played for many years in the White Hart with Roger Sherlock (RIP), the great Sligo flute player and Liam Farrell, the equally able Tyrone banjo player, with whom he formed an enduring partnership.

He toured Ireland & the USA, and made many recordings, and was filmed on several occasions. In the early 1970’s he joined forces with Liam Farrell, Danny Meehan the stalwart Donegal fiddle player, PJ Crotty (RIP) on flute from Moyasta, Clare, Kevin Boyle on guitar, John Roe on piano and Tom Madden on vocals to form Le Cheile, in the one of the earliest ‘supergroups’.

Le Cheile recorded two albums in the 70’s Lord Mayo and Aris, a compilation of which was re-released in 2006.

Raymond’s music, his mastery of the contrasting skills of playing rousing reels and the ability to bring tears from listeners to his prolific slow air playing, along with his conviviality and ‘Craic’, have retained him close to the heart of present day musicians and listeners alike.

In this enduring spirit a great number of his friends, musicians and family are coming together on the 4th of June 2016, to pay tribute to his music & memory. A star-studded line-up of musicians from Ireland & England based musicians will appear.
