John Doyle looks ahead to the meeting where every race is huge

Royal Ascot
Wednesday June 15th 2016

2:30 – Jersey Stakes

This year’s renewal is just as big a puzzle as usual. Horses dropping down in trip and the specialists have to be considered. Ibn Malik looks a specialist at the trip and has a good level of form. He hasn’t run since winning the Free handicap at Newmarket in April and sets a decent standard. For the John Gosden team, Castle Harbour stepped up from his Maiden win to win a strong York handicap impressively. If continuing to progress, he will be very competitive here. 2000 Guineas 3rd, Ribchester is an interesting runner now the ground has come up soft as his form is very solid

Selection: Castle Harbour

3:05 – Queen Mary Stakes

The big race for 2-year-old Fillies. The market is headed by Lady Aurelia, from last year’s winning trainer, Wesley Ward. This Filly was super impressive on debut at Keenland and has been heavily supported. The home team is headed by the Frankel filly, Queen Kindly for the Richard Fahey team. On her recent debut, she showed tremendous pace to pull right away. All the others need to show massive improvement to be involved but have a chance as the soft ground is an unknown

Selection: Lady Aurelia

3:40 – Duke of Cambridge

Never the strongest Fillies Group 2, the standout performer is the French raider, Usherette. This Filly has shown steady improvement for Andre Fabre and was ultra-impressive when winning at Newmarket. Afterwards, Fabre suggested she is one of the best he has trained. Lucida returns for Jim Bolger and can be competitive while Jazzi Top is a player too.

Selection: Usherette

4:20 – Prince of Wales Stakes

The newest Japanese superstar, A Shin Hikari, heads the market here and will be hard to beat. He won the Hong Kong Cup in December and then on his first run in Europe, he powered away from a quality field in Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan. A similar performance here will make him hard to beat. Found and The Grey Gatsby head the opposition. Foundhas good form but has had some hard races recently, so it is hard to see her being at the peak of her form. The Grey Gatsby was an unlucky second here last year but this is his seasonal debut, so he might need the race and won’t be suited by the soft ground.

Selection: A Shin Hikari

5:00 – Royal Hunt Cup

The big cavalry charge of the day where you need plenty of luck in running. Convey, for the Sir Michael Stoute team, is a short priced favourite this year but it is easy to cast him aside as though he has been eye catching, his win rate isn’t good. Buckstay is interesting as he likes Ascot and is likely to be ridden by the master of late delivery, Jamie Spencer. Earth Drummer and Master of the World are others to consider. Donncha has a series of good efforts on soft ground and deserves a big win. Librisa Breeze has been well backed and could be a blot on the handicap for her in form stable

Selections: Librisa Breeze

5:35 – Sandringham Handicap

Another notoriously difficult handicap, full of unexposed, improving fillies. One that stands out here is the John Gosden trained, Persuasive. This filly has progressed rapidly recently and could have any amount of potential. Czabo for the Mick Channon team is another with soft ground form who will be suited by the race

Selection: Persuasive
