Racing: Irish Grand National

What a Liberty

Trainer Dot Love and jockey Ben Dalton celebrate Liberty Counsel’s victory in the Ladbrokes Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse

By Damian Dolan

Liberty Counsel was a shock 50-1 winner of Monday’s (April 1) Ladbrokes Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse this afternoon.

Trained by Dot Love and ridden by jockey Ben Dalton, Liberty Counsel led rounding the home turn and fought off the challenge of Away We Go, ridden by Paul Townend, to record a famous and unlikely victory.

Liberty Counsel settled in the middle of the field for the majority of the three-mile-five-furlong race, but some fine jumps down the back straight brought her into contention. There was little to choose between Liberty Counsel and Away We Go was they jumped the last, but Liberty Counsel dug deep to take the prize by half a length.

The surprise result leaves Away We Go’s handler Willie Mullins is still searching for a first Irish Grand National win. Home Farm (10-1) and Sweeney Tunes (12-1) rounded off the placings in third and fourth respectively.

The 10-year-old mare had last been seen in the in the Kim Muir Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, but gave little indication of her Fairyhouse form as she finished well down the field.
