Priest tells parish to turn away from ‘unsavoury’ yoga

A Donegal priest has stunned his parishioners by urging them to ditch ‘unsavoury’ activities such as yoga, tai chi or reiki.

Fr Padraig O’Baoill, of Gweedore, made the comments in last weekend’s newsletter, printed in Irish, reading: “As followers of Jesus Christ we should not partake in deeds that go against our religion.

“Accordingly, you should do not take part in yoga, thai chai or reiki. Do not put your soul in jeopardy for the sake of these contemptable things.”

Fr O’Baoill is reported to be in Lourdes at the moment, and told one reporter that he would comment further on the issue on his return to Gweedore parish, which is located in the Gaeltacht and run by the Diocese of Raphoe.

The comments reflect church teachings that suggest that as activities such as yoga originate from other religious practices, that Christians should refrain from practising them as it would be in conflict with their own religious teachings.
