Police appeal for help investigating Staples Corner vehicle death

Police have appealed for help in their inquiries into the death of 55-year old Patrick Downer, of Bedford, at Staples Corner on 22 December.


A post-mortem on Tuesday 29 December and gave the cause of death as multiple injuries.

An inquest opened and adjourned on Wednesday 30 December at Barnet Coroner’s Court.

Mr Downer was one of five demolition workers who had become stranded when their van broke down on the northbound M1 at Staples Corner.

Two of the men were taken away – with the van – by a recovery vehicle, and the other three left on foot to try to reach public transport. Having walked around Staples Corner roundabout, Mr Downer was struck by a van on the slip road to the M1 southbound.

The driver of the van stopped after the collision. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and causing death by careless driving. He was bailed to a date in late March pending further enquiries.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive.
