Under 16 League Final
St Kiernans 1-10
By Fiona O’Brien
Great rivals Parnells and St Kiernans put on an hour’s worth of exceptional football in Greenford last Saturday, as the boys in blue came out on top in a one-point victory.
It was probably the most entertaining game of the weekend, and almost neck and neck throughout.
The teams were level on 0-2 apiece early on after Parnells scores from Niall Twomey and Lewis Dickinson and from the Kiernans via Aron Gallagher and Paddy Ryan.
After some missed attempts by both sides, Matthew Joyce set Elliot Mcphun up for an opportunity and the full-forward pulled over a lovely one-two movement with Cloneth Gallagher to set himself up for a goal shot.
Unfortunately his effort hit the post, but Joyce was on hand to gather the rebound and take the lead for his side, before Ryan put two points between the teams soon afterwards.
Both teams, perhaps nervy in the opening stages, started to leave scoring chances behind them, with shots left short for the keepers to collect, but Parnells really started to put the pressure on from the kick outs, and swamped the Kiernans half to make it difficult for them to gain any ground up the pitch.
It began to work, as the Parnells started to win more possession and frees and they were rewarded for their efforts as Dickinson claimed a sweet point after a shimmying run around the left of the square.
It began to become one way traffic at this stage as Parnells made all the play down at one end of the field, but Kiernans’ backs were vital in ensuring that it did not translate to a big lead. A brilliant pass from Conal White to Michael Walsh was intercepted really well by Martin Sexton, but the Kiernans clearance was scooped up by the ever-dangerous Jojo Thabo before the chance was snuffed out again by the team in black and white.
The teams exchanged a wide shot each before the break just before Parnells took a 0-5 to 0-4 lead into half-time, as Thabo’s brilliant run was set up well by Ciaran Griffin’s lay-off.
