The mayor of Paris has declared that she will award the Medal of the City of Paris to Republic of Ireland football fans for their sportsmanship.

French sports newspaper L’Équipe, reports that Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced the supporters had been “exemplary in their sportsmanship” and distinguished themselves by the “atmosphere” they created from the start of Euro 2016.

The Grand Vermeil is the French capital’s most prestigious honour and has been awarded to many cultural and political figures such as jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, author Toni Morrison and Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.

Mayor Hidalgo has written to President Michael D Higgins to tell him of the award. Super fan Jamie Monaghan will collect the medal on Thursday, July 7.
