Padraig Harrington named as Ryder Cup vice-captain

Team Europe captain Paul McGinley today announced three vice-captains for the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles this month.

Spaniards Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez are joined by Dublin Padraig Harrington, who has appeared in the competition six times.

McGinley was the hero of the 2002 tournament, when he famously holed a ten-foot putt on the 18th hole to win his match against Jim Furyk.

Olazabal was the captain when the team pulled off the Miracle of Medinah two years ago, and cigar smoking fan favourite Jiminez has played four times for Team Europe giving the side a wealth of experience to draw on.

Two-time major winner Harrington, Olazabal and Jiminez are joined by golfing legend Sam Torrance, who captained Europe to their 2002 victory, and Des Smyth.

The qualifying players were finalised on Sunday night and McGinley selected his three wild cards yesterday.

He chose Portrush golfer Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher and overlooked former world no.1 Luke Donald.
