Cu Chulainns 1-07
North London Shamrocks 1-13
by Sean Moriarty
North London Shamrock booked their place in the London Intermediate County final against St Brendan’s after a controlled display at Ruilsip on Sunday.
Shamrocks took control of the contest from the outset and were able to withstand a late rally from the East London side.
Cu Chulains did open the scoring with a Brian McVeigh free but they opposition responded seconds later with Niall Costello’s effort from play.
Cu Chulainns were lucky to survive a sustained attack from the men in green – first Dualtach Molloy missed a near-certainty in goalmouth while keeper Sean Molloy had to make a huge effort to stop a gallant Danny O’Reilly (yes that Danny O’Reilly of the Coronas fame) effort.
The men and red and white hit the front for the second, and final time, when McVeigh and Martin McCaffrey assisted Markus Miskelly’s fine effort from play.
The Shamrocks settled down after that and hit their rivals for six unanswered scores including a fine goal by PP O’Hara who was set up by Brian Smith who had already contributed a point from play himself.
Mark McFaden was another to add to his team’s score sheet was unlucky to be denied a second when his shot hit the upright. Even fullback Graham Carr added his name to the score sheet as North London took to the driving seat.
Cu Chulainns were offered a lifeline when Miskelly pointed a free but it was quickly negated by Scot Conroy’s converted free on the stroke of half time.
He struck again just after the break to put eight points between the sides while midfielder Damian Moloney and corner back Graham Carr added to the rout.
Cu Chulainns did hit a purple patch mid way through the second half were they hit three unanswered scores courtesy of a brace by Moloney and McCaffrey.
There was high drama towards the end of this rally when Shamrock’s goalkeeper Joe McHugh was judged to have pulled down a Cu Chulainn forward in the square. McHugh was black-carded and sent to the line while Brian Berkley was drafted in to replace him
Meanwhile Fiachra McArdle converted the resultant penalty to reduce the gap to six points. And while both sides scored one each (Moloney free for Cu Chulainns and Mark McFadden from play for the victors) the gap stayed at six points and Shamrocks advance to the county final on August 30.
