No Youghal-tide joy for Gabriel’s

Youghal (Cork) 0-14, St Gabriel’s (London) 0-09

By Damian Dolan.

St Gabriel’s All Ireland dream was ended at Ruislip on Sunday, and the London champions could have little complaint.

After making it all the way to Croke Park in this competition in February, Tommy Duane’s side’s target was always to go one step further this time around, but they came out second best against Christy Cooney’s battle hardened Cork and Munster champions.

St Gabriel’s were without a game since making it back-to-back London titles some three weeks earlier, and unfortunately for them it showed. From the first whistle Youghal were sharper, both in mind and deed – the kind of sharpness that only comes with competitive games.

Gabriel’s, in contrast, looked slow and ponderous, and the heavy conditions underfoot only served to further expose their rustiness. Unchallenged on the way to being crowned London champions, the step up to the All Ireland, not aided by their less than ideal preparations, proved to be a step too far.
