Muff is a village in North West County Donegal, Ireland. It is near the mouth of the River Foyle and sits between theRepublicofIrelandandNorthern Ireland. It bordersDerrycity. Each summer, normally during the first week in August, the village celebrates the Muff Festival. This include ceili’s, competitions, street partying, parades, amusements, night time entertainment, live performances and much more.
This year sees the 33rd annual festival in the village and it is shaping up to be yet another memorable one. With 2013 being the year of The Gathering in Ireland, the Muff Festival is aptly titled ‘The Homecoming’ Festival 2013. The organising committee and locals are inviting people from the area, now living abroad, to return home for the celebrations this coming August. The festival will run from 2nd August to 5th August 2013.
A diverse programme of more than 30 events will be staged over the August Bank Holiday weekend. There will be something for everyone. One of the main attractions in recent years has been The Soapbox Derby. The Derby, now in its 6th year will be on theArdmore circuit on the Saturday afternoon. Other events will include It’s a Knockout, Lorry Pulling, Photography competition, floral exhibitions, street partying, parades, pageantry, treasure hunt, heritage walk and many more.
There will be a variety of amusements and sporting activities for the children and youth as well as music/talent competitions. This year it is also including the past members of the local accordion band to reunite and march on the opening night. Festival Queens from previous years are also attending the opening parade. An amazing spectacle is certainly in store.
This year’s programme commences with a ‘Welcome Home’, reminiscence evening in St. Mary’s Community Hall on Thursday 1st August. A variety of talks and discussions will take place on this evening.
Throughout the weekend there will also be a variety of crafts available alongside local home produced organic foods and goods. A pet show and teddy Bears picnic will also be happening!
Night time entertainment will not go unnoticed! A large selection of music will be provided in all the local bars. On the Saturday night there will also be a ‘homecoming’ barbecue dance in the purposefully erected marquee at The Squealing Pig. A great night’s craic and entertainment is guaranteed!
Also on the Saturday will be a ‘Graffiti Art Workshop and Skateboard Display’ with ‘Urban Vizualz’ and ‘SwitchPark’ in Finnegan’s car park. So anyone who fancies themselves as a future Banksy can come along and get creative in the world of street art. This is coupled with a skateboard demo and will be an event not to be missed.
