Mitchel’s in seventh heaven as champs go out

John Mitchel’s 4-12, St Peter’s 0-09

By Martin Mannering.

John Mitchels reached their seventh consecutive Lancashire final with a resounding victory over the defending champions at Old Bedians on Sunday.

St Peter’s have had something of an Annus horribilis with injuries and it carried up to Sunday when their influential full forward Ross Nolan suffered what appeared to be a broken collar bone.

It had been a much anticipated clash and it lived up to its billing for half an hour before Mitchels turned the screw. The holders actually got off to the better start as they moved the ball with pace and power.

Stewart Cherry at midfield, Enda Lyons, Ross Nolan, Kevin Swift and Dessie O’Malley had the Liverpool defence at full stretch. O’Malley landed three frees and an excellent point from play within the first ten minutes to take a 0-4 to 0-1 lead – the solitary reply coming from a Michael Molloy free.
