Mitchel’s comeback comes just too late

Emyvale (Monaghan) 2-09, John Mitchel’s (Liverpool) 0-12

By Martin Mannering.

It was always going to be a tough task for John Mitchel’s but to go into an All Ireland quarter-final without two of your stalwarts increases the task considerably.

The Liverpool club had kept a tight lid on the news that inspirational captain Paddy Mulligan had gone to Australia and the ever reliable full back Alan Brown had sustained a severe rib injury in the All Britain final and was unfit to start. They would both be badly missed.

Things got a lot worse for the Liverpool club within 30 seconds of the start of this match as goalkeeper Daniel Hickey found himself picking the ball out of the net. It came straight from the throw in as Colin Hughes slipped a pass through to Ryan McAnespie on the 40.

The star of the Ulster winning Monaghan minor team showed a clean pair of heels as he sped towards goal, before a quick lay off to Daithi Colton, who flicked across goal to give Daniel McMahon a simple tap in. David Bellew added a point two minutes later and Mitchel’s were at sixes and sevens as they struggled with the pace of the Emyvale forward division.
