John Mitchel’s 0-10, St Brendan’s 0-08
By Martin Mannering.
In a match worthy of any county final, Liverpool’s John Mitchel’s regained the Lancashire title with a two -point victory over St Brendan’s at Old Bedians on Sunday.
A strong cross field wind and a slippery pitch from the early morning rain couldn’t prevent these two sides from producing a wonderful game. It was an absorbing contest from start to frantic finish, as Brendan’s strove to retrieve the match.
True the conditions did lead to some errors from both sides but for the most part the football was of the highest quality. The relatively low scoreline can mostly be attributed to excellent defending by both teams.
The Mitchel’s full back line of John O Hagan, Alan Brown and Niall McShane were superb throughout, while at the other end Nathan Plant, Brian Johnson and James Mulligan formed a solid barrier for most of the match. Behind their respective lines, Daniel Hickey and Declan Alder were always secure in their work.
Mitchel’s enjoyed a slight majority of the early possession but took a while to get the measure of the wind and the usually ultra-dependable Michael Molloy missed two very score-able frees early on.
