Melissa Reid and Belfast’s Michaella McCollum, who were arrested for attempting to smuggle £1.5m in cocaine out of Lima airport have spent their first night in one of Peru’s squalid prisons.
The pair were taken to a local prison, where they could spend anything up to three years waiting to go to trial.
According to prison service sources, the two twenty year olds will probably end up being at the Virgen de Fatima jail south of Lima, where conditions are said to be grim.
The girls were moved under cover of darkness yesterday from a district court in the capital to a holding cell in the Palace of Justice.
It has been revealed that Michaella and Melissa have confessed to police they knew they were carrying cocaine in their luggage.
Court officials said this admission, together with their flight risk, was the reason they were refused bail.
