Mel C and Victoria Pendleton go head to head

Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm and Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton went head to head as they led relay teams in yesterday’s Shock Absorber Women Only Triathlon.

They joined 1,000 women as part of Human Race’s triathlon event that featured individual races, as well as the relay option, which saw three team members complete one of the three disciplines each; either a swim, a bike or a run.

Melanie and Victoria, who both actively participate in events that promote women taking up sport, each led a team that was made up of competition winners.

Luckily for Melanie both opted to compete in the 5km run for their teams instead of facing off in the cycle, after two other members of their team completed a 400m swim and 21.2km bike.

Team Melanie took the lead in the swim and led Team Victoria out of the water by quite some distance, but a swift bike leg from Victoria’s teammate meant Melanie only had a slender 23 second lead going into the 5km run.

Both women ran out onto the course just metres apart, and Victoria showed she clearly hasn’t lost her competitive edge as she made up ground on Melanie, before moving into first place and leading her team to victory.

Victoria completed her 5km run, in an impressive 20mins52seconds while Melanie did really well to complete in 22mins23seconds, with both teams separated in the overall race by just 1minute12seconds.

After the race Victoria said: “It’s been such a lovely day here, my team did a fantastic job.

“We were near the front of the pack for both the swim and the cycle so it gave me a really good opportunity to win the race. I’m so proud of them both but was really worried I was going to let them down, but we won!”

Melanie C said: “It’s been another fantastic day at Dorney Lake. Again I’m totally inspired to see women off all ages, shapes and sizes, from the elite to the beginner.

“It really is the best place to do your first try. I was really excited to be here, I set myself a bit of a challenge trying to beat a multiple Olympic Gold Medallist and really I was trying to compete against myself and cheer on my team mates, who did so incredibly well.”

Alongside the celebrity competitors and amateur participants, were an elite wave of women’s triathletes competing for prize money, as GB star Emma Pallant took the triathlete title.
