McIlroy follows tears with big win

By staff reporter

Rory McIlroy ended a turbulent week, in which he announced his split from fiancée Caroline Wozniacki, with a win– as the new BMW PGA champ.

And after birding the closing two holes at Wentworth, the NI golf star revealed he couldn’t wait to go home to Belfast and see mum Rosie – the one woman that he said would always be in his life, before jetting straight off to the States to play the Memorial.

He said: “I’m arranging for a few friends to come around to my parent’s house for a few drinks, but it’s back on a plane tomorrow and back at it and get ready for the next tournament.”

It is the 25 year old’s 12th victory as a professional, but the first on European soil.

McIlroy had been in a relationship with Danish tennis star Wozniacki for two years, and plans had been underway for a wedding in New York.
