McArdle Cup joy for Moindearg

Moindearg 0-10, Tir Chonaill Gaels 1-05

By Damian Dolan.

After plummeting from the senior championship to junior, the signs are that Moindearg could be finally turning the corner.

The club scooped the season’s first piece of silverware at Ruislip on Sunday, and its first since doing the intermediate and Murphy Cup double in 2010, but boy did Moindearg make hard work of it, as their tally of 13 wides to Tir Chonaill’s four would suggest.

For Tir Chonaill’s all English-born side, however, it was yet another final appearance, but still no silverware. Runners up in the junior championship for the past two years, TCG also missed out in last year’s McArdle Cup final. Their time can surely not be too far away.

Darren McGowan needed just 19 seconds to open Moindearg’s account and the half back would later add another impressive score to edge his side into a 0-3 to 0-2 lead. The second quarter would not live up to a tight and enthralling opening 15 minutes, but Moindearg still went into the break with their narrow lead in tact – 0-5 to 0-4.
