A Mayo taxi driver last night waived fares from celebrating Leaving Cert students, asking them instead to make a donation toward a suicide prevention charity.

Joe Maxi Taxi updated his Facebook page ahead of the night’s revelries, to let students who were out on the town in the Ballyhaunis area know of their plans to raise money for 1life.

“All I ask is that you make a contribution in lieu of the taxi fare to the suicide prevention charity – ” 1life
I will have a donation box on board the taxi,” he said.

At the end of a long night, Joe uploaded a picture of the donation box to thank the students and let his followers know that they had raised €192.62 over the course of the night.

He was praised by his followers, with one saying: “Well done Joe Maxi Taxi never has another taxi service done anything like this id say. You family should be so proud of you. I sure hope everyone stays safe xx”
