In the past couple of years the beauty world has gone a little crazy for oils. We’ve seen the rise of facial oils, encountered hair oils and slathered ourselves in coconut oil.

But the only area we haven’t paid much attention to is our lips, the one part of the body that has no oil glands and could do with the most moisturising.

Different from balms, glosses or tints, lip oils provide the shine of a gloss without the stickiness, and they give more hydration than a balm.

If you are sceptical about moving away from your usual pot of balm, trying colourless lip oil is a good place to start. Lord & Berry’s Lip Oil Potion has a clear formula which is infused with essential vegetable oils and absorbs surprisingly quickly, leaving the lips feeling hydrated and nourished. The concoction can also be worn over or under lipstick if you are need of some extra TLC.

And if your skin has taken a battering during the cold winter months, Zelens Lip Treatment oil is also a great option for those whose lips are chronically dehydrated. Developed by a plastic surgeon, the product includes plumping hyaluronic acid which helps to replenish moisture and smooth fine lines. Containing Argan, Linseed and Jojoba oils as well as vitamins and peptides, apply the oil first thing in the morning or before bed to eliminate roughness and counter chapping.

But if you’re feeling really daring, more and more beauty companies are now jumping on bandwagon and launching lip oil products with added colour. GOSH lip oils are available in four different colours, including hot pink and a neutral peach shade and feature nourishing ingredients such as Argan and Macadamia oils.

A pricy option is Lancome’s Juicy Shaker, which looks like a cocktail shaker and requires the user to wobble the bottle a little before applying the coloured pigment. By not shaking the bottle you can apply the oils and leave behind a subtle shade, but giving the potion a swirl you can achieve more intense shade with a gloss varnish. With a formula containing peach kernel, sweet almond and cranberry oils, as well as Omega 3 and 6, the product is a joy to apply. The only downside is that as the product is completely non-sticky, the staying power is not the best.
