Longford avenge final defeat by Exiles

Longford 2-17, Warwickshire 0-04

By Larry Cooney.

Longford avenged their 2013 Lory Meagher Cup final defeat by recording a nineteen-point victory over 13-man Warwickshire at a damp Pearse Park last Saturday afternoon.

It was day to forget for the Exiles who started quite well but completely capitulated after they fell behind to a Joe O’Brien goal in the 25th minute and a second Longford goal from Cathal Mullane on the stroke of half-time when they trailed by 2-10 to 0-4.

To make matters worse on a miserable day for the Exiles they had impressive corner back Seamus Brough also dismissed for a second yellow card just before they returned to the dressing room at the interval. Sean Hennessy was also given an early bath midway through the second half also for a double yellow offence.

After giving a good account of themselves in their narrow first round defeat to Fermanagh, Warwickshire were also handicapped by the unavailability of four of their starting XV before the throw-in. It was therefore a must-win game for the holders and to their credit they battled gamely when the scores were tied at 0-3 each at the end of the first quarter.
