London pay for wasted chances

Westmeath 1-15, London 0-11

By David Hennessy.

London hearts were broken in Ruislip on Saturday as Eamonn Phelan’s team crashed out of the Liam McCarthy Cup when a second half Brendan Murtagh goal sent Westmeath on their way to a 1-15 to 0-11 victory and on to a contest with Waterford in the next round.

Although both teams had their moments in the first half, London were the team with greater control but fired thirteen wides and had they taken more of their chances, this match’s result could have been so very different.

Instead, The Exiles took just a slender one point lead in at the break and would come to rue their wasted chances when in the 51st minute, Westmeath forward Murtagh pounced to win the ball from Adam Price’s long ball, turned and smashed the ball past a helpless Darren Russell.

London’s solid goalkeeper Darren Russell had frustrated The Lake County with several fine stops but there was nothing he could do to keep Murtagh’s rocket of a shot out of the net. The teams had been level on 0-9 each before the game’s only goal and that was as close as London would come to their leaders for the remainder of the game.
