O’Neill has plenty more to smile about after Robbie Keane’s return to form
Robbie Keane has given Martin O’Neill a real selection boost ahead of the Euros, after he came back from injury in emphatic form by scoring two goals against New England Revolution on his return to LA Galaxy.
His brace helped secure a 4-2 win in the Major League Soccer showdown, and will give the Dubliner great encouragement ahead of O’Neill’s squad announcement on Thursday. His timely goal-scoring return comes just two months after he underwent knee surgery.
O’Neill’s team take on the Netherlands at the Aviva Stadium on May 27, and the manager will name his squad on Thursday, intending to name his final 23-man squad for France the day after the game.
The 35-year-old striker has now scored four goals in four games in the MLS this season. After travelling back to Dublin for the international friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia, but taking no part, he will hope to have forced O’Neill’s hand into picking him after returning to fitness.
“It feels like at the moment that we’re getting people back and then someone is missing through suspension or injury,” Keane said after the match.
“Come July, hopefully we get everybody back together, everybody fit and healthy, and I think you’ll see a stronger, stronger team.”
Keane and Giovani Dos Santose scored the first three goals before the Revolution came back through Kelyn Rowe and Juan Aguldelo. Former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard replaced Keane after an hour’s play and added Galaxy’s fourth in added time to seal the victory.
