Julie de Libran focused on Sonia Rykiel’s “iconic” DNA for her latest Pre-Fall collection.

The blonde designer has been at the helm of the fashion house since May 2014 and has used her role as Artistic Director to inject a classic feel into the brand.

Her most recent collection is full of fun designs like a bright pink, long-sleeved jumpsuit and a leopard print coat with a fur collar.

Rather than dream up entirely new ideas, Julie looked back through archives at garments she felt represented the true spirit of the brand and gave them a new lease of life.

“For this year’s pre-fall collection, I wanted to concentrate on the Rykiel wardrobe and the elements that make up its DNA,” she explained to harpersbazaar.com.

“I like this exercise in style, in working with the house’s deeply iconic pieces and re-interpreting, adapting or giving them a little twist to make them of-the-moment and desirable right now.”

There’s also some fabulous furry hats in the range, which further reflect the retro vibe. Julie sees the ideal Sonia Rykiel girl rocking a black and grey knitted jumper or a grey pant suit with one of the warm headpieces, complete with sequin boots, during the winter.

She’s a fan of sparkles herself, choosing a pair of sequined tracksuit bottoms as her go-to piece for the colder months while a low boot with a spot of sparkles are her favourite footwear.

It seems Julie is never at a loss for inspiration, as last year (15) she spoke about how artist Jeppe Hein, who uses mirrors, played a big part in a previous line.

“This collection plays with light in many fascinating ways,” she noted. “I experimented with fabrics, using embellishment and metallic leather to create a reflection.”

She also takes on board advice from Sonia herself, who urged Julie to make things easy and comfortable, but glamorous and feminine at the same time.
