Director Tomm Moore’s Song of the Sea has been announced as one of the nominees for best animated film for this year’s Academy Awards.

The film, which follows Moore’s hugely successful debut The Secret of Kells, features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Lisa Hannigan, Fionnula Flanagan and Pat Shortt.

Made by Cartoon Salon, a Kilkenny based animation studio, the animation premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and is due for general release in March.

It is up against Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How To Train Your Dragon 2, and Tale Of The Princess Kaguya for the ‘Oscar’ awards which are on Sunday, February 22.

Many have noted how the films have pipped The Lego Movie to the post, one noted exception from the list as it was the highest grossing film at the UK box office for 2014. It took in more than The Hunger Games, The Inbetweeners 2, The Hobbit and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

However, The Lego Movie did win best song at last year’s awards for Everything is Awesome.
