Irish walk into light

Irish across UK to walk into light

London, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow to join Ireland and rest of world Darkness Into Light 5km

Irish communities in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow will all be taking part in next month’s Darkness Into Light 5km walk for suicide and self-harm prevention charity Pieta House in Ireland.

This is Pieta House’s tenth year, the seventh year of the Darkness walk, and the second year that Irish people in the UK have been able to take part in the DIL walk, which has become something of a local and global phenomenon.

This year’s event is expected to be the biggest since Pieta House first launched Darkness Into Light in 2009 with over 120,000 people expected to turn out in 120 locations across the globe on the morning of Saturday, 7 May including Ireland, the UK, Canada, Australia, the Middle East, Asia and Reykjavik in Iceland.

This year walkers in those countries will be joined, in spirit, by Irish people in Christchurch in New Zealand and Abu Dhabi.

Registration for Darkness into Light supported by Electric Ireland is available online now at www.darknessintolight. ie.

“We’re very grateful to the communities across Ireland and abroad for your continued support to Pieta House,” said Joan Freeman, founder of Pieta House.

“Your courage, vision and generosity have contributed to bringing hope to thousands of people every year and has led to the phenomenal success that is Darkness Into Light.

As Pieta House celebrates its tenth year, you can be very proud of what you have achieved.”

Pieta House is a suicide and self-harm crisis centre founded in Lucan, Co. Dublin in 2006.

With nine centres throughout Ireland, Pieta House provides a professional one-to-one therapeutic service for those who are experiencing suicidal ideation or engaging in self-harm.

A doctor’s referral or a psychiatric report is not required and the service is completely free of charge.

To date, Pieta House has supported more than 20,000 people, with over 5,000 of those seeking help in 2015.
