Opportunity missed but Ireland show shoots of recovery

It certainly wasn’t pretty but in terms of picking up the pieces left scattered all around by New Zealand in the summer, it was a promising beginning for Declan Kidney and Ireland to the international season.

The memory of Ireland’s three Test whitewash at the hands of the All Blacks in the summer, particularly the 60-0 hammering in the 3rd Test at Waikato Stadium, may not have been banished, but Ireland took those first important steps on the road to recovery in Dublin last Saturday.

Ireland’s mixed bag of a team, which took to the field minus the likes of Brian O’Driscoll, Paul O’Connell, Rob Kearney, Rory Best and Stephen Ferris will certainly have benefited from the experience of playing against a South Africa side more functional than flamboyant.
