Ireland shines at BAFTA nominations

Irish talent once again features widely in BAFTA nominations

As the 1916 centenary begins, and the Irish in Britain prepare to focus on their modern day relationship with their adopted home, UK and Ireland co-produced films are celebrated.

The 69th annual BAFTA award nominations were announced this morning, and there are plenty of nominations for Irish talent and Irish produced films among the line-up.

Irish/UK co-production ‘Brooklyn’ picked up 6 nominations, including Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best British film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Julie Walters, Best Costume Design, and Best Make Up & Hair.

Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’ received just two nominations, Best Adapted Screenplay for Emma Donoghue and Brie Larson competing with Ronan, Alicia Vikander, Cate Blanchett, and Dame Maggie Smith for Best Actress.

Irish actor Michael Fassbender was nominated his portrayal of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle’s ‘Steve Jobs’, where he is up against last year’s winner Eddie Redmayne, as well as Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Irish co-production, set in Co. Kerry and starring Colin Farrell, ‘The Lobster’ is also nominated for Best British Film, with Northern Irish director Stephen Fingleton up for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his film ‘The Survivalist’.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘Bridge Of Spies’ and Todd Haynes’ ‘Carol’ lead the field with nine nods each. Alejandro G Inarritu’s ‘The Revenant’ follows with eight. In the Best Film category, they are joined by ‘The Big Short’, and ‘Spotlight’.

The 69th BAFTA awards will take place at the Royal Opera House on 14 February.
