London actor and DJ Idris Elba is taking on a new challenge in his passion for cars as he prepares to take part in the Circuit of Ireland rally.
Elba, who rose to fame through his portrayal of Baltimore gangster Stringer Bell in The Wire, hosted television documentary series Idris Elba: King of Speed which showed off his love of driving.
His role in the Circuit of Ireland is being filmed for a new Dicovery Channel series where the Luther star takes on different land, air and water racing challenges.
The 42-year-old has currently been test-driving along rural Tyrone and Monaghan roads in preparation for the race, which kicks off in its traditional Easter weekend spot in six weeks.
It comes after previous James Bond star Pierce Brosnan gave the Mandela star his seal of approval to become the next 007.
“May Daniel Craig bring home the bacon as long as he wants,” said the Drogheda actor.
“But yeah Idris would actually make a good Bond. Colin Salmon also. May the best man get the job.”
At the time Elba tweeted: ‘Isn’t 007 supposed to [be] handsome? Glad you think I’ve got a shot!’
In the past he expressed concern about being the first ‘black Bond’ saying we don’t say ‘blue eyed Bond’ or ‘white Bond’, ‘I hate that phrase’.
