Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip  have welcomed President Higgins to Windsor Castle on the first day of his historic state visit to Britain.

He is accompanied by his wife Sabina, Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore and his wife, Carol Hanney.

They will in due course travel by horse-drawn carriage through Windsor’s streets, where onlookers gathered in their hundreds amidst large union flags and tricolours.

inside the castle, both Ireland’s and Britain’s national anthems will be played.

President Higgins and his wife Sabina had been greeted earlier this morning by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at the Irish Embassy in London.

The royal couple chatted with Ireland’s president and his wife, the Duchess saying that the sun had come out for the visit.

A state banquet will take place at Windsor Castle tonight.
