Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins, his wife Sabina and the heads of state of 15 other nations are in attendance today at event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War World War I in Belgium.
Over seventy countries were invited to the ceremony, hosted by the King and Queen of Belgium in Liege, at the Monument Interalliés at Cointe.
This evening, Mr and Mrs Higgins will attend the First World War Commemorative Service hosted by the United Kingdom in Mons.
The UK ceremony will take place at the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery – the resting place of soldiers from Britain, Ireland, Canada, Belgium and Germany.
