Mags O’Sullivan wants your help in sending her into space.
She wants to become the first Irish woman to fly to space on the Lynx X-COR Space vehicle.
Mags, who lives in Tralee, Co Kerry, says that from as far back as she can remember she “dreamed I was born to fly and I have always had the ambition to fly to Space.”
“About 14 years ago I learned to fly single engine aircraft and I qualified as a pilot. I currently fly single engine, fixed wing aircraft with Atlantic Flight Training Academy in Cork airport.”
But flight opportunities aren’t that thick on the ground in Kerry so she also works as manager of the Tralee Aqua Dome in Tralee.
In Oct 2011 she became the first Irish Woman to fly to the Edge of Space and did so in a MiG 29 Fulctrum, flying out of Sokol airbase in Nizhny.
“During the flight I flew the MiG from 4km altitude up to 12km altitude doing gentle turns and banks.
“At 12km altitude the test pilot, Sergei Kara, took control of the MiG and began to build up speed. Once 1.94 Mach was reached Sergei raised the nose and we headed straight to the Stratosphere.
“Seeing the blackness and infinity of space against the backdrop of the blueness of the atmosphere below was very humbling,” she said.
“I have entered the Lynx Competition race in the hope that I do get to fly to actual space in the new Lynx X-COR Sub Orbital Spacecraft.
“When I read about the Lynx Space Academy competition my gut feeling was a positive one and that at least I’m one step closer to achieving my dreams,” she said.
There are three stages in the competition process and the first stage is purely down to votes.
The top 200 who get the most votes between Ireland and the UK will qualify for the 2nd stage.
The 22 winners of national vote campaigns around the world will be sent to Global Space Camp in Florida in December 2013 but only the top person will win a place on the spacecraft and get the chance to see Earth from Space.
